How to Maximize Your ACA Subsidy

Your subsidy is calculated on your projected annual household income β€” not last year's pay stub. That means an accurate income estimate is the single biggest factor in getting the right amount of help. Estimate too high and you overpay each month; estimate too low and you could owe money back at tax time. We help you project income correctly so your subsidy is accurate.

Many self-employed Floridians, gig workers, early retirees, and families between jobs assume they earn too much to qualify β€” but eligibility is based on Modified Adjusted Gross Income and household size, and enhanced subsidies have widened who qualifies. We run your free subsidy check, compare every plan at your ZIP code, and handle enrollment at no cost.

ACA Tax Credits & Subsidies FAQs

Common questions about ACA premium tax credits in Florida.

ACA tax credits (also called Premium Tax Credits or subsidies) are financial assistance from the federal government that reduces your monthly health insurance premium. They are available to individuals and families who buy coverage through the ACA Marketplace and have household income between 100%–400% of the Federal Poverty Level. The credit is applied directly to your monthly premium so you pay less each month.

Savings vary based on income, age, family size, and ZIP code. Some individuals may reduce their premium to as low as $0/month, while others may save a few hundred dollars per month. The lower your income relative to the Federal Poverty Level, the larger your potential subsidy. A licensed agent can provide a personalized estimate based on your situation.

For recent plan years, individuals earning roughly 100%–400% of the Federal Poverty Level may qualify for subsidies β€” approximately $15,060–$60,240 for a single person, or about $31,200–$124,800 for a family of four. Enhanced subsidies may extend eligibility beyond 400% FPL by capping premiums as a percentage of income. Income thresholds are updated annually.

A Premium Tax Credit reduces your monthly premium (what you pay for the plan). A Cost-Sharing Reduction (CSR) reduces your out-of-pocket costs β€” deductibles, copays, and coinsurance β€” when you use healthcare. CSRs are only available on Silver-tier plans and for households earning 100%–250% of FPL. Both can apply at the same time.

Generally, if your employer offers affordable, minimum-value coverage, you do not qualify for ACA subsidies. However, if your employer plan costs more than roughly 8.5% of your household income for self-only coverage, it is considered unaffordable and you may qualify for Marketplace subsidies instead. Family members not offered employer coverage may also qualify.

If your actual annual income ends up higher than what you estimated when enrolling, you may need to repay some or all of the excess subsidy on your tax return. If your income ends up lower, you may receive an additional credit. Reporting income changes to the Marketplace during the year helps minimize surprises at tax time.
